The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) came into effect in July 2014 and requires all organisations with more than 250 employees or a turnover of more than £50m to quantify their energy consumption and take advice on every efficiency improvements every 4 years.

The scheme aims to reduce EU energy consumption by 20% by 2020. It is regulated by the Environment Agency and penalties against non-compliant companies could be as much as £90,000.

Businesses should have been given a series of recommendations in the form of an ESOS Audit Report for implementation by December 2019. This leaves you with plenty of time to comply, but starting early can help spread the cost of compliance and allows you to realise the return on investment and energy savings from the recommendations sooner. There is also expected to be a bottleneck in getting ESOS compliance work done the closer businesses leave it to the deadline, so it’s important to get it started as soon as possible.

The obligations can require work including new lighting, more modern heating, air conditioning refrigeration or ventilation systems, better insulation or even improvements in industrial processes to increase business profitability through energy savings. By putting the recommendations from an ESOS audit into effect, it’s possible to realise significant savings.
