Open the window we hear you cry!
Well, yes, and there are definitely benefits to natural ventilation but it’s not always the complete solution to improving commercial or industrial building ventilation. In some modern office buildings, for example, it might not even be possible to open a window and if the local air quality is poor, opening a window is the last thing you will want to do.
And so, we look to controlled mechanical ventilation strategies as a viable alternative and reliable, longer-term solution.
In this blog we go right back to basics with the EESI formula of ‘what, why and how’ when it comes to ventilation.
What is ventilation?
In simple terms, it’s about moving outside air into a commercial or industrial building, and distributing it, effectively, around that building.
The World Health Organisation defines ventilation as ‘the intentional introduction of fresh air into a space while the stale air is removed’.
Why improve building ventilation?
Beyond the human need for fresh air, there are many reasons to improve building ventilation, including:
- Removing pollutants, bacteria, moisture and unpleasant odours
- Controlling air flow, thereby reducing energy bills
- Stopping condensation
- Maintaining a comfortable environment
How to improve building ventilation
At EESI we like to keep things simple with a three-point solution – install, service and maintain – and along with all of our electrical and mechanical services, this very much applies to improving building ventilation:
- Install – it may sound obvious, but in order to improve controlled mechanical ventilation, you first need to have a system installed. As with most mechanical solutions, one size doesn’t fit all which is why we can work with you to design and install a system that’s right for your building
- Service – just like a car, regular servicing of your ventilation system, new or old, is absolutely key and will highlight any faults or potential faults that need to be remedied
- Maintain – fail to prepare, prepare to fail is quite the life lesson but PPM is the lesson when it comes to ventilation systems. Filters, valves and lots of other components are very good at collecting dust and debris over time, so regular maintenance is a must since ventilation is all about providing cleaner air
